BASIC TRAINING

In this course you will learn the basic elements of seafaring which will enable you to perform duties on board a sea going vessel or offshore platform, efficiently and safely. You will also be able to assist in the protection of life at sea.

This is the mandatory training module for all seafarers, and is conducted in accordance with Section A-VI/1 Paragraph 2 of the STCW Code and the STCW 78 Convention as amended.

Aim/Goal

The aim of this course is to provide the basic qualifications for individuals who want to become a professional seafarer. The training provided is applicable to any capacity sea going vessel, offshore rig, or platform.

Target group/s

This course is mandatory for any individual who intends to pursue a career at sea or offshore.

Duration & Delivery

The duration of this course is seven (7) days. Classes are from 8:00am to 4:00pm. A combination of lectures, practical activities and hands-on demonstrations are used to deliver this course.

COURSE OUTLINE

This course is modular and consists of the following:

  • Personal Survival Techniques (Basic)
  • Personal Safety & Social Responsibility
  • Fire Fighting & Fire Prevention (Basic)
  • Elementary First Aid

COURSE CERTIFICATE

Upon successful completion of the course through written examination and skills testing, candidates will receive a certificate in accordance with Section A-V1/1 Paragraph 2 of the STCW Convention.

Possible careers/job titles: Deck Hand, Ordinary Seaman on all seagoing vessels

Age

Attained a minimum age of 17 years

Basic Skills

Basic Literacy skills

Identification

Two (2) form of Identification (Drivers Permit/License, Passport, ID Card and or Birth Certificate)

One (1) Passport sized photograph (Photos must have white background).

Additional Requirements

Must be medically fit with good eyesight (backed by a medical report and eye test).
Valid seafarer medical form: Download Medical Form

Registration can only be finalized when the completed Medical Form is returned.

Steps To Follow

1 - Gather Documents

Gather required documents and get scanned copies of each document.

  1. Two (2) forms of Identification (Drivers Permit/License, Passport, ID Card and or Birth Certificate)
  2. One (1) Passport sized photograph (Photos must have white background). You can do a selfie shot.
  3. For the course Basic Training a valid Medical Form
  4. For those that are upgrading or re-validating require a valid Basic Training Certificate 
  5. See list of courses that require a valid Basic Training Certificate to be submitted

2 - Register

Register online or bring your documents and register at the office.

3 - Wait for Contact

Once your application is completed and approved, an officer will contact you regarding attending the class

4 - Make Payment

Once your registration has been approved, you will be given instructions on making a payment.

5 - Attend Scheduled Class

Attend all the scheduled classes and pass exams

How are classes delivered?

Courses are delivered via blended learning. Practical classes are taught physically on location at the institute and theory classes are provided online.

Do I have to be a national of Trinidad and Tobago?

No. Once you meet the basic requirements for entry you will be able to qualify.

Is there parking available for students on the campus?

Yes and parking is free.
