In this course you will learn the following: 1) Steering the ship and complying with helm orders. 2) Keeping a proper look-out by sight and by hearing. 3) Participating effectively in the execution of a safe watch. 4) Operating emergency equipment and applying emergency procedures. 5) Performing seamanship duties effectively and efficiently. 6) An awareness of pollution and its detrimental effects on the environment

Aim/Goal

The aim of this course is to provide the training required to form part of a navigational watch in accordance with the STCW 78 as amended Section A-II/4 Table A-II/4 of the STCW Code.

Target group/s

This course is recommended for persons who are certified as Seaman Class IV and have gathered at least twelve months seatime experience aboard a merchant vessel.

Duration & Delivery

The duration of this course is two (2) weeks. Classes are from 8:00am to 4:00pm. A combination of lectures sessions and hands-on demonstrations are used to deliver this course.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Under entry requirements: Seatime must be approved by the Maritime Services Division
  • Not less that eighteen (18) years of age
  • Medically fit
  • Good eyesight in terms of colour, vision and form
  • Ability to read and write
  • Certificate of Competency as Seaman Class IV
  • Seatime aboard a merchant vessel

COURSE CERTIFICATE

The Certification of Competency as Seaman Class 2 is awarded by the director of Maritime Services Division, Ministry of Works and Transport to candidates who are certified as a Seaman Class 4 and have successfully completed the above training course to the satisfaction of the director.

This course is recommended for seafarers with Class IV certification and a minimum of twelve (12) months sea time on board a merchant vessel.

Possible Careers/Job Titles: Supervisory positions on the deck e.g. Bosun or Mate.

How are classes delivered?

Courses are delivered via blended learning. Practical classes are taught physically on location at the institute and theory classes are provided online.

Do I have to be a national of Trinidad and Tobago?

No. Once you meet the basic requirements for entry you will be able to qualify.

Is there parking available for students on the campus?

Yes and parking is free.

  4. For those that are upgrading or re-validating require a valid Basic Training Certificate

2 - Register

Register online or bring your documents and register at the office.

Once your application is completed and approved, an officer will contact you regarding attending the class

4 - Make Payment

Once your registration has been approved, you will be given instructions on making a payment.

5 - Attend Scheduled Class

Attend all the scheduled classes and pass exams
